Licensing

Overview

We use the licensing model introduced by Dinamo in 2020. Instead of limiting font installations or web traffic, this model looks at the commercial value that a company (herein a client, a licensee) derives from the use of the font. For this, the size of the company is used to determine the volume and, consequently, the cost of a license. In this model, the licensee is the company itself, not the designer or studio they commissioned. The designer then becomes a mediator between us and the company, while the font itself becomes a common expense, just like materials or printing.

The Designer

Since the commissioned designer is usually the one who pitched the font to the client in the first place, their project-based use is included in all types of licenses. This designer is not part of the client's company size. However, if the client decides to hire other designers (usually freelancers) later on, a third-party license (see License types) is required. If a designer wants to use the font for multiple clients, it must be licensed by each client individually. If a designer bought their own license, they may use the font for self-initiated and personal projects.

Company size → License volume

The company size of a licensee is the sole metric used to calculate the cost of the license. This helps to equalize licensing as a whole: Since larger companies have more equity, a wider reach, and, in turn, derive more value from the use of the font, their licenses are larger in volume than those of smaller companies.

Discounts

Our main discount is for students (-75%). If you are a student, just send us a copy of your valid Student-ID or any other enrollment certificate to mail@dito-typo.com and we will give you a discount code that you can use in the checkout process. With the discounted fonts, you may only do self initiated and university related projects. If you are a company that works for the common good (like a gGmbH for example) or an NGO, or have any other social or cultural background that deserves a discount, just get in touch and we will work something out.

License Types

Retail Licenses

In our online shop, we sell Print, Web, Social Media, and Third-Party licenses. These licenses cover the most common use cases. In addition, we offer free Trial licenses, which allow designers to sketch ideas, pitch them to clients, and evaluate the fonts.

Licenses on Demand

Our App, Moving Image, and Unlimited licenses are available on demand. The Unlimited license is independent of the company size of the licensee. It is intended for companies that exceed the options of our online shop. Since the volume of this license is dependent on many factors, please get in touch to obtain an Unlimited license.

Print License

Print licenses are the most common type of license, as they cover most day-to-day graphic design work. With this license, printed and digital, non-dynamic documents (e.g., PDFs, Logos, or Flyers) can be designed. These fonts are delivered in .otf formats.

Web License

The Web license differs from the Print License because these fonts are delivered in .woff and .woff2 formats, which are optimized to be embedded on websites. The Web License is intended for use on one domain only.

Third Party License

If you are a licensee and need to share the fonts with third parties (such as freelancers, developers, or printers), an additional third-party license must be purchased. A third party is someone who is not employed by your company. This third party may only use the font when working on your behalf. However, no third-party license is required for your original designer.

Social Media License

The Social Media license is intended for using the fonts on social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube). Unlike the Print License, this license allows for non-static use as well. These fonts are also delivered in .otf formats.
